SWKA have been approached by a local charity for assistance in their fundraising for underpriveledged children and youths in the Llanelli and BurryPort area. Tackle Life is a small local charity. The purpose of setting up the charity is to encourage the therapeutic value of fishing and improve the wellbeing of individuals living in the Burry Port/Llanelli area by providing small grants to assist in the provision of fishing tackle.
The Burry Port/Llanelli area is a deprived area and therefore many individuals are socially and economically marginalised. There is a high level of NEET young people, unemployment, substance misuse, offending behaviour and mental health issues. Being inactive can have a detrimental effect on a person’s physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing. One way to improve the wellbeing of an individual affected is to provide positive activities that improve wellbeing, and increase self esteem.
Tackle Life feel that fishing should be promoted as a positive activity that can breach social barriers and improve the wellbeing of an individual. The Burry estuary and surrounding area has a wealth of opportunities for people to go fishing. However, those individuals who are financially deprived would find it difficult to buy the necessary resources to begin this pastime. Tackle Life would like to offer these resources to enable individuals who are financially deprived and can evidence that fishing would improve their wellbeing.
We are currently funding four young men who are homeless from Llanelli. All these young men are housed in supported housing with The Wallich. The staff aim to support the young people to improve their life skills and move on to live independently in the community. Tackle Life will fund four licences and fishing equipment with aim of improving their lives through the positive activity of fishing.
On July 10th we are holding a fishing competition in Lougher to promote the charity locally and to raise funds. We are currently looking for sponsorship for this event and would appreciate any help anyone can offer.
